A view from Herat City - Old parts of town

History Herat’s history is quite turbulent and eventful. Achaemenid records says the city appeared first under the name of Haraiva. Alexander the great was first to built a fortress in the city. Arabs captured the city in 651 C.E.. They fought over the city, lost it and regained it again and again. Herat beacame part of the Samanid, Ghaznavid, Saljuk and Ghorid dynasties subsequently. When Mongols attacked the city, Herat was destroyed completely. Mongols under the command of Ghenghis Khan slaughtered the masses and left the city in ruin.

  4. Leif Hagen asked me to stop and say, Welcome to the Blogging World. My name is really Abraham Lincoln and I am related to our President Abraham Lincoln. I live in Brookville, Ohio with my wife of 54 years, Patty. We have five adult children who are married and living apart.

I really did like your description of your city and marveled at the last part where Ghenghis Khan destroyed the place and slaughtered all the people. Wars still exist like that and there doesn't seem to be an end to them.

I was in our Rotary Club here in Brookville for many years but got out of it when I sold my business. I met a lot of nice people in Rotary.

You would be most welcome at my blog. Come on over, sign up as a Follower and see my photography. Thank you.

  7. Baruch ha-ba = Blessed is he who comes. Welcome to our world community of city photo-blogging friends.
Quite a history. But I see from your photo and from the magnificent banner that Herat did not remain in ruins.
We here in Jerusalem are observing the annual day of mourning and fasting for the destruction of the city that happened on this date in ancient times.
    Cities, and life, rise again.
    Shalom to you.

  28. Lovely shot.

It can be good and bad to build a city on a major route. It'd be great for commerce during times of peace but would also be coveted by the greedy.

  29. Dear all friends,
I am so happy and realy impressed by your nice and encouraging comments. What I want to tell you all brothers and sisters as well as the whole world is that we can build a country which has suffered for more than three decades of war and destructions. A little hope toward bringing a huge change is the key and all this needs to be done through a heart with full of love, passion, loyalty, and happiness. Love you all and will share what has never been told about my country and its people through media.
I am looking forward to hearing and learning more and more from you and your experiences through pictures and connections.
